My connections to Play
Pet rocks were my childhood best friends. They were not my
only friends but a great contributor. I lived in the country and needless to
say, I didn’t have much to do. My parents didn’t allow television in my home so
my selections of activities were limited. My best friend lived a couple of
doors down and we would search the gravel walk way to find the perfect rocks to
add to our collection. We had a museum of rocks by the time I was 12.
My second connection to play within a childhood memory would
have to be skating around the house pretending I owned an indoor restaurant. In
my restaurant we skated to serve food to our guest. I never knew I would one
day grow to dislike serving food on skates. I worked at sonic for about two
years in high school. I fell so many times.
I included a few quotes because I found so many quotes that described
my childhood play so well. My parents were old fashioned they believed in
letting me be who I wanted to be as crazy as it may be. I find that as a parent
I tend to correct behavior too much. In doing this assignment it reminded me
how free spirited I was as a child and made me realize that I tend to try to
stop my children when they do some of the same things. I guess we get so use to
trying to keep order and make sure that they are safe that we forget that some
of these same things have made us who we are today. I loved to dress up prissy
and wear high heels while running thru the garden and rolling in mud. I would
come in the house and have to strip down and take a bath. All of my friends
enjoyed coming to my house because we didn’t have to choose one toy at a time
we could just play freely and clean up later. As a parent I try to keep everything
and order and clean. Now don’t get me wrong I love to play and have fun but I
feel that I may have forgotten how great it felt to just create something out
of nothing. For all that goes to let the kids dress up nice and run in mud.
I
like to make fun and games out of everything. I almost feel that I try to
ensure that there is something to do and create out of everything to the extent
that I leave little for the imagination. I know as a child I had a great
imagination and I see it in my children as well. From the pet rocks, flower
gardens, dress up flings, and sleep overs my life was always interesting.
